Default Watch for planes on the highway.

The Eisenhower interstate system requires that one mile in every five must be straight. These straight sections are usable as airstrips in times of war or other emergencies.

To the best of my knowledge, that thinking started in Germany during the Nazi era. The highway system over there was built to move their troops and supplies. Of course the military planes needed somewhere to take off and land as well.
