_ is fine. I have revised the script to remove other special characters that aren't allowed in vhosts so it should work now.

As noted above, NickServ's autoop needs to be turned on in order for it to work. Once you join the channel and get voiced, the color vhost will be given to you instantly and you can choose to stay in the channel or part afterwards.
